For years Hauppauge has been making high quality add-ons to make your computer entertainment experience better.

They've done it again with their HD PVR. This compact unit connects to your PC through a USB 2.0 interface for high speed data transfers. The back panel has Component Video, RCA audio and optical audio inputs with loop through outputs for each. The loop-throughs let you put the PVR in-line with your cable/satellite box or other video source and your TV. Front panel connections let you add additional input sources like a game console. An IR blaster will send a signal to the video source to change to the appropriate channel to record your program. The included suite of Arcsoft software lets take full advantage of the PVR's capabilities. TotalMediaExtreme handles the capture, edit and playback functions.

The HD PVR support for Windows Media Center allows you to use the HD PVR to watch, pause and record high definition TV under Windows 7 Media Center from a cable TV or satellite set top box. It operates in a similar way as other Hauppauge TV tuners for Windows Media Center, but the HD PVR records in high definition using H.264 encoding.

MediaConverter lets you save the file in a different format including the Blu-ray compatible AVCHD. Watch what you want, when you want to with Hauppauge. High Definition Video Recorder With the Hauppauge HD PVR, capture your favorite high-definition TV programs from any HD set-top box or HDTV featuring component video outputs.

Model Brand Hauppauge Model 1212 Details Type Video Capture & Editing Others Sound card TV H.264 AVCHD video encoderAC-3 audio encodingRecording datarate: from 1 to 13.5 Mbits/sec (user selectable)Recording format: up to 1080i from component video (YCrCb)Note: the video input format determines the recorded format. For example, 1080i input records at 1080i, 720P records at 720P, etc. Any other format conversions needs to be done with the MediaConvert program (supplied). Pros:Great picture quality. Includes enough cables to get going. Easy setup in MythTV.Cons:Bulky and ugly (twice as large as I expected).

There are four bright blue LEDs on the top of it that light up as it's recording which are very obnoxious; I have covered them with electrical tape.Overall Review:After connecting it initially to a Windows machine to install the latest firmware, I have been using this device under Linux with MythTV. It is recording from my cable box very well at 1080i or 720p resolution and I am surprised at how good the picture quality is. Optical digital audio is working fine as well (bring your own cable).Setup was surprisingly easy. The modern Linux kernel already has the drivers and MythTV has supported it for years. I am accustomed to having to tinker with stuff for hours to get it to work in Linux, but this was a close to plug and play as possible. Pros:- Records perfectly in HD- Easy set up- Great tech support- Reliable- Well built (I've dropped mine I don't know how many times and it still works just a fine as when I got it)- all around great productCons:No HDMI in or out.

But that's to be expected since its an older model. But other than that, nothing at allOverall Review:If you're looking for game capture card strongly suggest getting one if these.

Preferably the newer model which is, the HD PVR 2 gaming edition or the gaming edition plus especially if you have an Xbox One and you wish to record. Pros:I use this to transfer video to my cpu for editing YouTube videos and making Blu-ray discs. Good, high quality once you adjust the settings and raise the input bit rate to 13.5mbps (default is 9 I believe. Good, but not great).

Uses component video cables and a choice of component audio or optical.I've owned it for over three years and have never experienced the over-heating issues I see some people speak of (knock on wood). I guess I've lucked out there.Default capture format opens right up in Sony Vegas, my preferred editing program. All-around handy device that gets the job done and from what I've read I'd recommend it over the PVR 2 gaming edition.

You can still use component cables to record PS3 games. Only issue is if you want to capture from the PS4 you'd need the PVR 2 since the newer console no longer supports component output (HDMI only).Cons:PVR and ArcSoft software are very finicky. You have to get to know what they 'like' and 'dislike'. I have experienced a lot of problems I've read other people write about. I've had videos fed in by the PVR cause Vegas to freeze and crash for seemingly no reason.

If you're using ArcSoft to feed in video and need to close out of it, opening it back up will sometimes cause the program to 'lose' the PVR and think the device is still being used by the former instance of the program before you closed out of it. I agree that a cpu reboot normally fixes that issue. As far as the PVR sometimes freezing up during recording or crashing Vegas when you attempt to import a video, aside from making sure the PVR drivers are good (very important), this is what I do to remedy the issue: I reboot my cpu. When it is finished loading and ready to go, I power on the PVR (USB cable already connected to cpu). Once Windows acknowledges the PVR with the usual sound, I pull the power cable out of the PVR for about 10 seconds and plug it back it in. I listen for the Windows USB sound again, then I open the ArcSoft capture software and I'm good to go.

Don't know why, but this works every time. When I forget to follow this process step by step I usually have problems. Either the ArcSoft capture software will freeze during capture, or the captured video will crash Vegas repeatedly and I'll have to feed it in the cpu again (very annoying).Another thing I dislike about the PVR is it will not read input from standard definition devices most of the time. If you have a stack of old home movies on VHS tapes you want to feed in from a VCR, or if you're an old school gamer and want to record playthroughs from the old NES or SNES (Genesis, etc) you'll need to pick up a Dazzle recorder w/Pinnacle Studio. The Hauppauge PVR will not read anything with a resolution less than 480p. Big issue seeing how VHS tapes come in at 480i and the old video game consoles output at 240p.

Get a Dazzle recorder for $50 to take care of this.Overall Review:If you're a driven videographer and refuse to take 'no' for an answer from any piece of technology, this PVR is the best device on the market. Once you get familiar with it's qwerks and jerks it'll do a fine job for you.If you're more of a casual editor and don't have a lot of patience you'll probably throw it through the wall and find something else to do. Pros:The quality is definelety high quality (up to 1920x1080)file compression is niceCons:It's kind of annoying how it runs off of HD Component cables. They are extremely bulky and a pain to work with.I've been using the Hauppauge HD PVR for a little under a year now, and there's one MAJOR problem with mine. I'm sure that it's a problem with only my device, but it's a MAJOR problem none the less.

One of the video cable plugs on the device itself is very sensitive. If the cable isn't plugged in a certain way, than the screen will go black. And to top that, even when it is plugged in right, it will cause the screen to go black for a couple of seconds, then work correctly for a minute or two, then black out for a few seconds, work for a minute, repeat over and over again.Overall Review:Get any other capture card. Pros:-Relatively small-lightweight-nice lighting-supports Composite cables (please see cons and other)-software is easy to use and allows you to record not only off the PVR but the software allows you to record things off your Webcam too if you have one.-great video quality.-Livestream's procaster allows you to select this as a device to stream from.Cons:-The price.

Please See other-Does something weird with the Wii sensor bar if you use the composite ports in the front. It makes the cursor waaay too jumpy and sensitive. Adjusting the sensitivity didn't work. Also, plugging a Wii into the composite ports and playing a GameCube game also messes up your aim and the direction that you move your character in.-Software only records in three formats: MP4, M2TS and TS meaning-If you want to edit it, you'll need a converting program as some online converters have a file size limit. Windows movie maker and Corel Video Studio Pro X5 -at least the Demo of X5 anyway- does not accept MP4Overall Review:-I found an electronics store an hour away had the same products as this but Newegg had it for a cheaper price and yes it was cheaper on Newegg even when taxes and shipping were included -thank goodness.-The software apparently doesn't work on a Mac. A Friend of mine found that out when I took the PVR over to his house.

To me it's not a con as I have a PC, But Mac/ Apple users beware.-As stated in the Cons, The Wii cursor acts weird when you have the composite cords plugged it. The only way to fix this is to get come Wii component cables to plug into the back of the PVR.-In order to record in the highest quality possible, you will have to change the input resolution in the software. Also depending on what device you have set up, you may have to change the screen resolution. If you connect a Wii to this device, you'll need to change the Wii's screen resolution to 480P or higher -I was able to change the screen resolution to 480p on my 17' TV screen after I plugged in the Wii component cables. Ive been using Hauppauge Capture to,well, capture game play footage from my xbox and im getting pretty frustrated with it(and fed up with Hauppauge in general). Ive posted here in the past about my problems with Capture( thread is here: ) and the problem persist. So i turned off the display and the 'hardware acceleration' option and its still crapping out. Just tried recording and it crashed 10 minutes in, which seems to happen more often than not.

It either crashes or when it doesn't, the video is screwed up(as described in my other thread). Ive tried contacting Hauppauge for tech support but having to wait 3-4 days for a response is a little much, i even tried to sign up for their forum for help but i have yet to receive a confirmation email(and that was almost 4 days ago). Ive had the pvr for over a month and its been nothing but a headache. Thats kinda what i thought. I saw somewhere that OBS and FFSplit/XSplit can do it too but, like i said, i couldnt get them to work.

So are capture4me/gamercap (they seem to be basically the same program, just different aesthetics) better than capture or should i stick with capture? I think OBS only works with devices that provide uncompressed output. If only compressed (pre-encoded) output is available, it won't work. I don't know anything about how XSplit works. The various programs from Menten Holdings Ltd don't have all the same features but they do have a lot in common I don't know if any can produce recordings that are better in any way than those created using Hauppauge Capture. So i turned off the display and the 'hardware acceleration' option and its still crapping out.

The HD-PVR line of capture devices need to be power cycled on a regular basis, even every day. (To power cycle the HD PVR 2, remove power from the unit for a few seconds and then plug it back in.) Are you doing that? The HD-PVR line of capture devices need to be power cycled on a regular basis, even every day.

(To power cycle the HD PVR 2, remove power from the unit for a few seconds and then plug it back in.) Are you doing that? No one lives forever mac download. The PVR is connected to my desktop (which is on for most of the day), i put it into sleep mode every night.does that count?the only thing(or the main thing) thats got me frustrated is the fact that, after switching the way i record(from recording game play and vocals on one CPU to recording vocals on my laptop and game play on my desktop), i was able to record two videos that were perfect( no dropped frames, no I-frame blending, no shenanigans). I was able to import them into premiere, import commentary, sync both up without a hassle and render all with in a few minutes.

But since those two videos, every recording session has ended up with messed up videos and i havent done anything different. Thats what has me puzzled. No, that doesn't count. I mean the HD-PVr 2 has to be disconnected from its power source, the 6 V DC adapter plugged into the wall. It probably wouldn't hurt to unplug HDMI and USB since they are also capable of supplying power.

Soooooo it appears it may have been the latest version of Capture (1.0.33252 or whatever). I uninstalled that version(and the drivers), and reinstalled the previous version(1.0.33232) and i recorded a test video and it was perfect(everything was synced up in premiere) so yeah.take that as you willPS: I also forgot to change the directory settings, it was recording the video onto the PC it self instead of the external hard drive. Were you saying you had no problems capturing from both the PVR2 and when using the hdd attached to the MB? If that's the case then it would point to an external hdd speed issue or a possible usb port conflict. Try to attach your hdd or the PVR2 on the rear of the desktop. Sometimes there are separate pairs of 2 or 4 usb ports so test on each pair to make sure they are not competing with the front ports. (I've assumed you use the front ports for convenience). Ok at 1st you were doing both on the PC but I see you used someone's suggestion to split the process between the PC and laptop but you say it didn't help.So if now I have it correctly the commentary capture is a red herring at this point.

Since it's done on a separate laptop and you are transferring it after the fact it has no bearing on the PVR2 capture going bad.You capture game play on the PC to a 1TB external hdd and your video skips frames and messes up. Is it correct to say that when you capture to your on-board hdd it's fine but you want to use the external drive due to lack of space on your main hdd. If so then as I said your problem must be connected to the usb port or the external hdd.A few more things:As a test, you could try to reverse the process. Capture the video on the laptop while still using the external drive and the commentary on the PC. This would eliminate the 1TB hdd as a problem and likely point back to the usb port you chose on the PC.Reduce the video bitrate (Quality settings) and make sure you have no special options set (ie scaling and encoder options at default)Did you get the Showbiz software disc with your unit. It's no longer available or supported but you could install it if you have it.

They can co-exist on the same PC. If you have it don't re-install the older driver just the software. I had the same problem with the standard capture software that comes with Hauppauge PVR2. Problem was frame skipping and sometimes it would freeze entirely during recording. So I went with Arcsoft Showbiz (Video Editor) which luckily came with my PVR2. This software works flawlessly.I loved the HD 1212 and the older version of Arcsoft and was very happy to have the newer version of Arcsoft with the HD 1504 GE Plus My HDVR1 1212 came with a Hauppauge PVR1 hardware specific version of the software which incorporates the capture module and my HDPVR2 1512 came with Arcsoft Showbiz which also contains a capture module. These are the 2 software I use to capture on 2 separate PCs. The 1512 also came with WInTV7 but I don't use it.

It was released on December 12, 2006, by Corporate Thugz Entertainment (CTE), and Def Jam Recordings. The Inspiration was supported by three singles: 'I Luv It', 'Go Getta' featuring R. Kelly, and 'Dreamin' featuring Keyshia Cole.

I've also installed the newest standalone Hauppauge Capture program which the OP is using but I've only needed it to add an external audio source from the mic jack when I test captured an internet source PC to PC via the HDPVR2. Other than that Showbiz works very well for my needs. I had the same problem with the standard capture software that comes with Hauppauge PVR2. It's true that Arcsoft Showbiz used to be included on the installation disc that came with most of Hauppauge's HD-PVR line capture products. I used Showbiz with the Colossus sometimes and it did work reasonably well for capturing TS files.

However after Arcsoft ended support and development for all their video products, Hauppauge replaced Showbiz with Hauppage Capture. If someone wanted to use Showbiz, with an HD-PVR 2 now they would need to obtain it from Hauppauge. I don't think the standard version of Showbiz works with Hauppauge's HD-PVR products.

I have the quality set to default(11.00 Mbps) with all other settings default except i have the quality set to constant rate instead of variable, seemed like variable would always result in it crashing.3. I found Showbiz and tried to use it but it kept saying that the device is not available or its in use even when there are no other programs running. Some other things:Every so often i get an error message(in Capture) about a system.null reference, if it happens again ill get a screen grab of it.The problem popped up (again) after i installed the latest capture update (1.0.33252) and driver (1.6.33232) so i uninstalled that and re-installed the previous version (1.0.33232) hoping that it would work again but it only worked for one video so i dont know if that screwed something up somewhere. Did you run hcwclear.exe between removal and the re-install. If you don't it can leave old traces and may not install properly.

This and the following steps may be a critical to a clean install so I'm interested to hear your answer.I also had to temporarily kill/pause my virus checkers because they blocked some parts of the program. The installer doesn't seem to have a working wait feature. When the virus checker asks for permission to deny or make changes the install program seems to skip a step in background and misses some files or changes.Don't forget to unplug (power) and replug (power) on the HDPVR2 and then reboot before you run the software after the re-install. Youtube has an Arcsoft Showbiz 'how to download' video. I'm not sure if that will solve the issue with the PVR 2 since the software may require Hauppauge specific drivers.

But anyway, it's worth a try.Quoted Link above edited by gll99 so it points to nothingI didn't check but that could be warez so I wouldn't recommend it. The version I'm discussing came with the HDPVR2 while Hauppauge was supporting it. It still works fine and I kept some of the updates on my PC it's still ok to use if you own the device and have the software but it is a hardware specific version for the HDPVR2. I didnt run hcwclear the first time, i didnt even know about it, but the second time(just now) i did a full removal and then re-installed it and it still messed up.

Ill try another install but ill pause my anti virus first and see if it changes/fixes anything. EDIT: it didnt. Are you using an hdmi cable from your xbox? If so did you try switching it.Have you tried capturing from another source ie. A cable box via component. To see if the problem persists? One last thing I can think of but I'm a bit reluctant to say it.When I bought the HDPVR2 I had odd connection / capture problems. The image would break-up and I'd lose connection.

I returned the unit and got another and the problem improved but it was still not right. Like you I tried all kinds of things. Finally I decided to switch the USB cable and used the one that came with the HDPVR1 and my problems were solved. I find it hard to believe that I received 2 units with bad usb cables but it seems that way to me.
