Veho Vfs 002m Scanner For Mac

Ordered this as I have quite a few 35mm negatives kicking around. After reading loads of reviews I decided on this unit. I was a bit worried about what I was going to receive as quite a few people have posted up negative reviews.

VEHO SLIDE SCANNER DRIVERS FOR MAC - The name of the product is also printed on the top of the box and the specs along with images of the slide accessories are printed on the sides. Veho has provided a good way of ensuring that you can not only preserve your memories but also keep them close to home. The Smartfix is aptly named as it has built-in. The VFS-002 is plug-and-play and is Mac and Windows compatible. The VFS-002 comes with one touch scan which allows you to capture the image in 1 second and save for future editing. 35mm & 110mm Negatives & Slides The veho VFS-002 is able to transfer 35mm negative film and slides and 110mm instamatic Negatives for editing, archiving or printing.

The set up is fairly straight forward. Run the install disc and enter the CD key printed on the CD wallet. I tried entering it as it is on the wallet but it said INVALID CD KEY. I tried again without the dashes in, still the same error message.

I tried it in lower case with the dashes and it was fine. The software didn't take long to install. Once rebooted I plugged in the scanner. I have Windows 7 and it needed to connect to Microsoft to download the drivers. This took around five minutes. Actually loading the negatives is fairly easy for 35mm but a bit fiddly for 110 (mine had been rolled when processed so kept trying to roll up while loading) Scanning is super easy, there are indents in the holder so you know it is in the right place. It is pretty much a live view with a small amount of lag so you know it is in the right spot.

Simply click capture and its done. I haven't used their editing software and used Paint.net to rotate/correct scans. I have attached an example of the scans. I have noticed some vignetting in the images but its not too bad, you may notice it in the thumbnails though.

You will get some reviews of this saying it's great they love it; and other saying the quality isn't good enough.So it clearly depends on what is an acceptable quality to you.For me presonally, I'm hardly a perfectionist - I don't own an SLR, I'm not a professional, I don't publish. Yet I do take pride in my photos and don't like poor quality; and this wasn't good enough for me. I sent it back. It would be OK just for scanning a one off, and I'm sure someone just doing an upload to facebook for a laugh at an old photo for example would be fine with it, but I was wanting to back up my entire old photo album so that in the event it got lost, burnt, etc, I'd always have a copy.

I didn't feel safe knowing that the scans produced by this would be all I had left.Also IIRC between the hardware and software it was quite fiddly to use. Thought all our photographs of forty years past were lost as they had been saved to a computer program that is no longer available and could not be converted. Still had the negatives but was unable to scan them on modern scanners as they were 110mm(?) saw this item when casually looking for something else, ordered it without much confidence, thinking it would probably be gimmicky but lo and behold was I surprised by the ease and efficiency of this item. All one has to do is fit the negative in the carrier, right way around, slide the carrier into the machine, using the mouse just click on the monitor screen when the object appears and save it to any folder, after saving the picture can be adjusted using a paint program, I use MS Digital Image 9. Yet another first class product from Amazon.Afterthought. I also managed to copy negatives of photographs taken and developed in Germany during the 1950/1960's which are very odd sized, carefully trimmed the negative to fit the included 'slide' carrier and after saving used the crop tool.

I purchased this scanner in order to digitize all of the rolls of negatives that my mother has stored. The user image of the river in the South Island of New Zealand taken in 1980 with an Olympus PEN EE is mine.There is a wide variance of opinion with this product, and normally do not purchase anything under four stars, so took a risk. I have uploaded this 33 year old image so others can judge for themselves.I was very happy with the results. I did not see any evidence of the image being excessively bright in the middle / dark at the edges that other reviewers suggested. I would caution that at maximum quality, an image is around 14Mb per file.I do support the other reviewers that recommend letting the scanner focus on the negative for a few seconds before scanning, this greatly sharpens the image.I also support the reviewers that remark that the trays are somewhat awkward to work with.

Unfortunately the set up of the trays takes longer than taking the images themselves. For that reason I have removed one star. This little scanner (and it is little - about 8cmx8cm) is a delight to use. I took it out the box, plugged it into the USB2 slot on my laptop, installed the software (disc) and used it straight away. I found the film/negative/slide holders to be perfectly sturdy, despite previous reviews and have already scanned in hundreds of slides and negs. I am very pleased with the results and the software supplied allows quite a bit of manipulation with the finished pictures.

I found that each time I moved a negative under the scanner 'eye' the scanner/software adjusted the picture on screen for the best picture, so it's best to let each image settle fully before you press the 'capture' button. I have used this on 135mm colour negs, 135mm black and white negs, colour slides and 110 colour negatives. I have even used it on some really big old negatives (55mm x 55mm), which I fed through the scanner without the frame holders. These worked, except only the middle of the picture comes out - interesting though! I have some glass negatives tucked away somewhere I an tempted to try as well!I think this is an excellent product at a very reasonable price. This product works.

It plugs in via a USB, you have holders for various sized slides and off you go. Put your slides in the holder, you get 3 per holder for 35mm Kodak slides, and scan the slide.

In using the slide holder the slider slots into position for the first slide and when scanned you just move the slider along to the next slot and so on.I am a little disappointed in the quality of the slides, I would have thought they would have been less grainy. I am not sure if this is the old slides themselves or the unit. However, no complaints and you can get through the slides reasonably quickly, the slowest part is in loading the slides into the slide holder but having said that you would have to do this with any make and when you get the hang of it you it is not too bad.One word of warning, if you break the slide holders then you are finished. I don't know if you can buy new ones and they seem rather delicate so store and use carefully.Enjoy and don't forget to backup and check the backup of your photos before you throw the originals away. I know a lot of people who are trying to save space and those photo albums take a lot of room so be warned. I wished to convert some old colour film optical slides to an electronic version for my new modern electronic projector.I found this product very fair value for money. It may not have given the most brilliant conversion compared with some more expensive models; but it proved quite adequate for my requirements at a very reasonable cost.

I would suggest that it is a very useful tool to add to any lecturer's kit.One slight problem I found was that the machine calculated the average brightness for a slide then the light intensity was varied accordingly; but if I did not hit the 'save' button at the best time, the slide was re-sampled and the light value changed. Thus the brightness and therefore the definition of the copy varied on a cyclic basis. I therefore had occasionally to re do a slide copy where the saved version came out too dark and definition was lost. I always qualify my ratings with a 'for the money' but, that said, this is a good bit of kit. I had a load of old negatives left by my parents with no hard copies as they had obviously got lost over time, some colour and some black & white. I had a little bit of difficulty at first with actually opening up the negative holder but soon worked out that you just need to be firm with it.

Operation couldn't be easier, with a 'slide then click' action, The pictures were of a very acceptable quality although some seemed to not quite fit the pegs in the holder, so cropping the picture just a little. The whole item seems quite well made, if a little flimsy in parts, but it does what it says on the tin. Money well spent! This device comes with adaptors for 35mm and 110 negatives and slides.I`ll get straight to the point.Scanning the 110 negatives was succesful, however, the quality wasn`t great. I set it at maximum resolution to get the best quality.

I have to put in to account that these negatives were about 20 years old and the quality of them must have degraded. On the other hand it was great to see my old memories on my pc screen. To put it in to perspective, if you were to print them out as a 6 x 4 photo.they would be of fair quality.Scanning the 35mm negatives was alot more succesful.The picture quality over the 110 negs was considerably better. I felt the colour was bland but the overall quality quite good. These negs were about 15-18 years old.

Printing them out on 6 x 4 photo paper would be of good quality.I would personally recommend a photo editing program like Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 or 3 or similar. I use X2 which allows me to improve the pictures by removing blemishes and adjusting colours.The bottom line is.It does what it says but is clearly better at scanning 35mm than 110 negatives. I haven`t tried slides as yet, but will update when i do. I already had the VFS-004 for Windows scanner, which produced acceptable scans for negatives but the scans for slides were unusable as they were massively over-exposed. Having recently bought a Mac, I decided to buy the VFS-002, which is Mac compatible, and see if the quality was any better. Well, slides are coming out much better in that they are no longer over-exposed. However, the light source is not even, so if there is not a lot of detail in the image you will get a hexagonal bright spot in the middle and the rest is grey and grainy.

Unfortunately, this also affects the negatives, not so obviously but on certain images the quality is very poor, again caused by the uneven light source. But, as one reviewer has said, you get what you pay for, and this will do me for now in that I am able to recover a large proportion of my old negatives into digital format at acceptable quality. I may buy a better scanner further down the line but this will do me for now. I have given three stars as it is by no means perfect and this has to be borne in mind by prospective purchasers. If you want very high quality scans then I would say that this scanner is not for you.Note that the scanner worked straight out of the box on the Mac and the included MediaImpression software installed with no problems and works perfectly.
