You are required to notify the Department of Safety and Homeland Security of any address change within 10 days of that change. This includes when you move as well as address changes made by the United States Postal Service or your local 9-1-1 Emergency Communications District when you have not physically relocated.

Notifying postal authorities will not provide the information to us. By failing to notify us, you could miss the renewal date of your license. The law does not require the address to be changed on your actual license, just on our files. There is no fee to change your address in our system. The easiest way to change your address is online.

If you want a new license issued that reflects this change, you must either apply online or go to a driver services center, pay the appropriate fees and have a new license issued. A duplicate fee ranging from 8 dollars to 16 dollars will be charged. The fee is based on the number of duplicates you have had and type of license you have.

All Certificate for Driving, Temporary Driver License and Temporary ID duplicates cost $19.50.

Additional Ways to Notify Us of Your Change of Address

Additional ways to update your record with your new address include:

writing to us at,

TN DEPT OF SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY
ATTN: RECORDS
1150 Foster Avenue
Nashville, TN 37243

or by picking up a change of address form at any driver service center.

To update your record with your new address you will need to provide the following information:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Driver License Number
  • Social Security Number
  • Old address that appears on current driver license
  • New address
  • County of your new address

Your license must show your legal residential address: a house and/or apartment number along with the street or road name. The city along with the correct zip code is also required. A post office box alone will not be accepted as a residential mailing address.

If your change involves a name change, you will need to visit a driver service center.

After we receive your information, your driving record will be updated within approximately 15 business days. Address change updates are added to your driving record on file with the Department of Safety, not your actual license. If you want a new license issued that shows your new address, you must either apply online or go to a driver service center, pay the appropriate fees (duplicates are $8, $16 for commercial driver license), and have a new license issued.
